WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
MLK Day of Service - January 17

The Radnor Township School District Parent-Teacher Organizations (RTSD PTOs) are excited to offer a variety of ways for the Radnor community to give back and learn during the sixth annual district-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on January 17, 2022.

This year's event will feature:

1. Kickoff Districtwide "Day of Giving" on January 17, 2022 from 10am-1pm at Radnor High School.  Please join us in donating the below items:

  • Size 6 diapers, Size 4T/5T Pull Ups, and Advance Similac Formula for City Team
  • Toiletries for the Wayne Food Pantry
  • Gently used books for Centro de Apoyo Comunitario
  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss for Community of Volunteers in Medicine
  • $25 gift cards to Acme/Target/Walmart*
  • Letters and drawings of welcome and encouragement
  • Cradles to Crayons items - please see wish list here
  • PB&J sandwiches to support Life Center of Eastern Delaware County   (can be made at home and individually packed in Ziploc; 2 sandwiches can be placed in a brown paper lunch bag)

* Letters/drawings and gift cards will be included in Welcome Packets given to newly arrived Afghan refugees.

2. Weeklong donation collections at each school

· RES will collect toiletries for the Wayne Food Pantry

· WES will collect gently used books for Centro de Apoyo Comunitario; and toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss for Community of Volunteers in Medicine

· RMS will collect $25 gift cards to Acme/Target/Walmart and letters/drawings of welcome and encouragement to be included in welcome packets for Afghan refugees at Nationalities Services Center.

· RHS will collect items for Cradles to Crayons

3. Read-Aloud for elementary school students on MLK Day, 1/17 at 10am on zoom (elementary schools will share more details on specifics).

Specifically at Radnor Middle School, we are partnering with Nationalities Services Center, a Philly non-profit organization that provides comprehensive services to empower immigrants and refugees to thrive in our communities and pursue a just future. Students and families can give back and learn about NSC in 3 different ways:

1)      View a 5-min video (We Are Neighbors) that introduces the kinds of people served by NSC and the hope that immigrants and refugees have for a better life in Philadelphia.  [Content Warning: Mention of violence at 3:10. Parents/guardians are advised to watch with students.]

2)      Donate! NSC is collecting physical gift card donations to grocery stores (Acme is preferable) and general retailers (Target and Walmart are preferable) in $25 amounts for newly arrived Afghan refugees.

3)      Create letters and/and drawings of welcome and encouragement to newly arrived Afghan refugees. English is fine (Pashto and Dari are the major languages for Afghans). Please keep your messages positive and encouraging. Messages can be aimed at adults, teens, or children. Messages should not include your full name or any personal contact information.

Any questions, please contact shuwen.wang@gmail.com

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
RMS Yearbook Orders Due January 31

You may have received an email directly from Jostens soliciting orders for the 2021-2022 RMS Yearbook.  That email was not spam, it was the school's yearbook publisher, and the order deadline is fast approaching.

If you are interested in ordering a yearbook for your student, you may do so here.  The yearbook development and publication is a school-sponsored event and all questions can be directed to Mr. Achenbach.

A separate email will be sent shortly to 8th Grade families with some additional details and asks for the yearbook.

8th Grade Activities Update

On December 22nd, all 8th graders received a special take-home Holiday Treat Bag from the PTO. The treat bags included hot cocoa, Hershey Kisses, candy canes, Rice Krispie treats, and Milano cookies. Thank you so much to all of the 8th grade families that generously contributed items for the treat bags.

RHS Program of Studies - January 13

8th Graders and their parents/guardians can learn about the program of studies offered at the high school along with available club/activity opportunities on Thursday, January 13 at 6:30 pm.  This will be a virtual event and more information (including the zoom link) will be through the school district at a later date.

Submit Your Student's Baby Pic!

Mr. Achenbach is looking for baby pictures of the Class of 2026 for the yearbook.  Pictures can be brought in to school to be scanned or parents can email them directly to him at andrew.achenbach@rtsd.org. The larger the file, the better.

If you have other pictures that feature your student/friends from their RMS days, please feel free to send those in to Mr. Achenbach as well.  Pictures should only feature RMS students.

8th Grade T-shirt Design Competition

In commemoration of your 8th Grader's time at Radnor Middle School, the RMS PTO is sponsoring a t-shirt design competition. The winning design will be chosen by the 8th grade faculty and staff of RMS. We are looking to the Class of 2026 to be creative and have some fun!  Please be sure to encourage your student to participate.

Contest Rules:

•    Designs for the front of the t-shirt only may include up to TWO COLORS.

•    Designs for the front and back of the t-shirt must include ONE COLOR for the FRONT and up to TWO COLORS for the BACK.

Check out the NEW RTSD/RMS Website

The school district launched the new RTSD.org website over the holiday break.  This website was redesigned based off user feedback and includes improved navigation, search and a mobile-friendly design. You can subscribe to an RSS calendar feed to keep up with the latest RMS school events and get faster access to Schoology and HAC on the left hand navigation.  Play around with the pages and be sure to check out the tutorial on how to get the most out of the site.

* Please note as of the time of release of this newsletter, the district website host was having some technical difficulties making some of content unviewable.  They have been working to fix the issue and hopefully the site is back and running by the time of this publication.

International Week Update

Due to the pandemic, there will be no country presentations, food, or volunteers allowed into the building this year, but the Multicultural Committee is working with RMS to provide multicultural experiences and activities during International Week Jan 24-28.

RMS STEM Night Success

Close to 150 students attended the inaugural RMS STEM Night on December 15th. Attendees participated in up to 3 sessions each, choosing from a total of 12 diverse offerings presented by community members: Build Your Own Self-Driving RC Car; STAT! Help This Patient!; Musicians Lab; Gear Up for Robots!; All About Aerospace; Can You Predict the Future?; Germbusters; Not Your Parents' Braces; Fun with Robots; Green Screen and Chroma Key Effects; Patent Models Quizzo!; and Elon Musk Needs Your Help.

The parent of one attendee remarked: "My son attended the event last night and came out raving about the interactive sessions, the informative and engaging presenters and wondering about new topics in STEM as potential areas to study. In other words, he came away with everything I could have hoped for from an evening of STEM. Thank you to you and to all the volunteers who worked so hard to pull this together!!”

NASA Competition

As shared with the students who attended the STEM Night "Elon Musk Needs Your Help" sessions, here is the link with information for any interested K-12 students to enter NASA's Lunabotics Junior Contest.

Entries are due by January 25, 2022.

This is a PTO sponsored event, and the PTO will continue to work with the administration to determine if/when it can be rescheduled.  Watch this space for more.

Thank you...
